MIL-DTL-24643
Low Smoke
Shipboard Cables
Due to concerns about flammability,
smoke, and toxicity, the U.S. Navy
introduced the
MIL-DTL-24643 cable
specification. Generally, this
document provides low smoke,
flame resistant cables that are
approximately equal in size, weight
and electrical characteristics to the
older
MIL-C-915 constructions. The
Navy has mandated that these (or
MIL-DTL-24640) cables be used
on
all new constructions and Navy ship
modernization projects.
MIL-DTL-24643 covers many types
of cable constructions, and utilizes
insulation systems of irradiation
cross-linked polyolefin, silicone, or
EPR depending on the slant sheet.
The outer jacket
is irradiation crosslinked
modified low smoke, zero
halogen, polyolefin.
